In the Name of the Fathers: Ethic of the Disenchanted
To honor your parents is not to obey them, because obedience does not require thinking. To honor your mother and father is to find the right teacher and learn from him or her. A father you only obeyed and feared would be a stepfather. This would be like commandments without study, learning without a holy land, truths without commentaries, theories without stories, ideas that are only images because they merely represent things without revealing them, naming things without giving them, images that are but copies of the things, or things but copies of their images. Worse, they would be names with images, images that become idols and not icons, names of persons who cannot be known. Then again, as everything has its place, there must be something good about this, just as there is a blessing for eunuchs, and prayers the dying can say to comfort the living.
