Note on the merits of the will to be wrong

Conservatives are less interested in thinking than in being right. That is why most liberals are in fact conservatives. It is also why many of us are happy to learn from texts and artworks whose authors may be morally very compromised.

Those who must always judge rightly will be doomed to recycling clichés. There are big businesses in instituting and enforcing them.

That is why politicians generally do not lead but follow. They have no new ideas, and finding any is not their business; winning is. "Democracy," like business, is a competitive game.

The real battle between left and right is between those who think that the world is like a book whose writing is completed, and that one only needs to know what heading to look under; and those who on the contrary think we read what is written only to continue it. The archives that contain the known are a cemetery guarded by the pious servants of a dead god.
